In 1980, my junior college spent $2000 on a beautiful pair of trumpeter swans
and released them into the pond in front of the admin building, so the president
could look out his office window and watch them paddle around. About a month
later, we returned from our Thanksgiving break, only to discover that the swans
were missing. The ensuing police investigation turned up swan parts in the
dumpster by the dorms, which then lead to a cadre of about a dozen international
students, who all happened to be from a country where sand is abundant, and
swans are not. Further questioning revealed that they had caught and killed the
swans, smuggled them into their dorm room, cleaned them, somehow cooked them
over a Coleman camp stove, and ate them. Their "explanation" was that
the chow hall had been closed for three straight days, and they were hungry. I
do not recall what, if anything, was done to punish the students, but I do
remember that the swans were never replaced, being as they are, apparently,
'halal'.
