I've got a great Lancaster bomber story as told by an RAF pilot, when I find it
I'll post it. Cheers, Mates.

one of my dad's ex-partners in business was the first U.S. soldier inside
Dakkau (spelling) prison. (Bob Dunstan)
Spielberg filmed a documentary a couple years ago and came to Dallas to
interview him.
3 months later he died.
he was a very interesting man for sure.

A short but true story.
A German ace was in a dogfight and was basically
finished for the day when he noticed a Spitfire off
in the distance. As the German closed in for the kill
he noticed the Spitfire was torn to shreds and
belching smoke. With this sight before him he felt for the pilot and his valiant
effort and decided
that he'd had enough killing for one day.So the
German pilot pulled beside the Allied pilot and waved him on and gave him an
escort all the way across the English channel. The two pilots were
introduced and re-united some 50 years later in
Vancouver,Canada.

and would have those images permanently seered into
his being.

Stories like that pretty much sum up the bond that aviators have for one
another, regardless of which side they're on. I read a story some years ago
about a P-51 pilot who shot out an engine of an ME-262 Luftwaffe jet fighter,
then followed the struggling jet down through a rolling field, where it
disappeared into a forest. The P-51 pilot veered off, and looked downward for
any signs of an impact explosion and the resulting plume of smoke, but there
wasn't any. For more than 50 years, the P-51 pilot pondered the fate of the
ME-262 pilot. Stories of that encounter were told by veteran pilot's groups, and
the Luftwaffe pilot (who survived the crash landing) heard about it through a
veterans group that connects former adversaries with each other. The two pilots
were reunited in Germany...once enemys, now friends for life.

what was strange was he never spoke about it. then one day spielberg walks in
the office with a camera crew etc. he told Spielberg that the sight and smell
was unimaginable and unforgettable. i guess he made his peace with his demons
finally.

If you just type dachau in google and select images
and then click on the first image it tells all about
the first day the Americans arrived and all the furor that ensued.I tried to
post the link but its
like 500 characters long and won't display here.

First or fiftieth I'm sure they all felt equally ill.
Words can't even begin to describe all the feelings
felt by everybody there that day.The prisoners beating the German soldier to
death with shovels and the Americans turning their backs gives us a glimpse of
the harsh reality of the situation

i thought originally that Spielberg was trying to make some money on this deal,
but all he did was document everything. it changed my opinion of the man.

Anonymous@26644 The German pilot is known in my travels .He was still flying a
ME-108,built after the war in France.I saw it flying at an airshow in
Abbotsford,B.C.,Canada.The storey sounds good the way it is but,I heard the
aircraft he escorted towards England was a B-17 bomber. It had the hell shot out
of it and 1 engine was smoking. The gunners were dead or with inoperable
weapons. You can bet any one of them would of shot at the German if they could
of.The bomber had just recently dropped a load on a city and would of been
repaired so it could do it again. The German pilot did not do his duty and
probably helped cause more German civilian deaths. My English and
Finish-Canadian friends who spent time with the Canadian army in the 1970s
avoided the guy after they heard what he did.Could you trust a guy like that?

Today "Bomber" Harris would be called a terrorist for his ruthless
targeting of all German cities with more than 100.000 inhabitants...one man's
terrorist, anoyher man's hero...
