Er, he scored a goal from a penalty that came about from dirty, cheating,
diving. Australia at least left the pitch with their heads held high.

the italians realy played like shit, they heve to play this way otherwyse they
would heve never wone the match, and the australians had a 2 times worldchampion
coach so is clear the italians heve cheated a lot.
mkcerusky Report This Comment Date: June 28, 2006 10:56AM
uhm...some facts:
1. italian way to play is never spectacular
2. Materazzi was sent off, and he should have got only a yellow card.
3. Australia plaied 30 minutes 11 against 1o they had a chance to win, and did
not win, which does not imply that australia was better then italy, on the
contrary it imply the opposite
4. Hiddink, Australias coach, hoped to beat italy with ball possession: everyone
knows that with ball possession you can't beat defenders like the italian ones,
you need fast play instead; thus Hiddink lost its match
5. In the previous world cup Hiddink was the coach of Korea who sent Italy out
thanks to the referee Moreno, who was so dirty that after a while he was banned
as a referee
6. The penalty: the player didn't dive, and in fact he is not a forward, he is a
defender, so you can't say that he is used to dive. He had fallen down because
he suddenlly found the body of another man on his legs.
7. The australian defender perhaps didn't mean to hit the italian player, but
unfortunately for him he did, and he also raised his arm a little bit up, enough
to stop the italian player, maybe he didn't want to, but he did.
8. According to the rules this is a penalty
9. However, it is one of those penalties that may be given or not...let say not
a very clear penalty.
10. Probably the referee wanted to compensate the previous error of sending
Materazzi off.
11. Thereferees in this world cup are doing very badly, even yesterday they
helped Brasil as much as they could.
12. If you are really used to see players diving, then you must admit that
Grosso, the italian player, did not dive, it is clear that he simply had fallen
down, but this has nothing to do with cheating: not evryone is able to run with
another man between his legs.
All this prove that the italians didn't cheat at all, the only thing we can say
is that the refereee was crap, and he made mistakes both for Italy and
Australia.
Honestly I like the Australia team (apart from Hiddink who is quite a good coach
but not a good loser) and I am sorry that it went out, they semply were unlucky,
but this doesn't mean that we cheated, and if you say so, it means that you
don't know the meaning of the word "sport"

Soccer is gay anyway.
Aussies just love sport and competition.

messyflatmate Report This Comment Date: June 28, 2006 01:15PM
i'm an aussie but its true that the italians didn't cheat. i have seen a lot of
diving but scarcely any that match, which was refreshing. yes sure the defender
could have easily jumped over Lucas Neal on the ground - how hard is that - but
anyone would have done the same in his position i.e. go for the penalty. Any
player would have done that.
As for the ref, mck you are too harsh or you haven't seen some of the appalling
displays in other games. Aus - Croatia for example. Rubbish refererring.
The Ital-Aus game refereeing was fine. Few whistles, lots of play the ball. Lots
of reading the play. Before the game people said he was a good ref and i think
that was borne out.
Italy don't play an exciting game, indeed since the 80's a boring game sadly,
but hopefully that will change. No one wants to see a team spend the match
hanging around their net but i am sure thats what their coach told them to do.
mkcerusky Report This Comment Date: June 28, 2006 01:44PM
messyflatmate you are partially right, in the sense thatI couldn't see the
match as I was in UK for work, I only saw higlights, and for what I know the
referee might have been quite ok, mine was basically a rensponse to all those
saying that it was the italians who cheated.
Also notice that the Italian player who was sent off, even if he knew that was
wrong decision, didn't protest at all, showing a good attitude toward the word
sport. This is a result, in fact that particular plaier is infamous in Italy
because he usualy behave in the opposite way, so we appreciated his
behaviour.
Yes it is true,Italy never plays a football which is spectacular in the same way
as the football of other teams. After the 80's the only spectacular Italy team
was at the USA '94 world cup, where we lost the final against brasil at the
penalties. But in that team we had a coach called Sacchi who was famous for his
spectacular football, and we had a player called Baggio one of the best plaiers
of ever in the world, who, after that, have always been left home because Del
Piero "had" to play instead of him (probably for some reasn related to
sponsors or to money interests)...Baggio was good and spectacular, Del Piero has
never been either good either spectacular with the national team, and as I have
been told, he has been crap also against Australia.
Also in Italy we always protest against the fact that our team is never
spectacular, but I would like to observe that yesterday I red a report of the
match in an english newspaper, and the author said he appreciated a lot the
match because it had thrill and drama.
Now, it is true that when brazil wins 3-0 against Ghana it is spectacular to see
3 goals, but it is also true that the result of the match is never put into
discussion, so there is no thrill at all and there is no drama, there is only a
show of good technique, but the match, as a competition, turns out to be not
interesting at all. It is exciting when your team wins 4-0, but you'll forget
this match soon, while you will never forget a thrilling match, maybe with a win
at the last second of the match. And probably, people will forget more esily
about the goal scored yesterday by Ronaldo then the goal scored by Totti against
australia.
I think even basketball fans will admit that a win at the last second (with the
ball going into the basket in the same moment as the whistle of the end of the
match) is something extremely exciting, even if your team hasn't plaied that
good.
Soccer, Calcio, Football, is first of all a sport, not a show even if the
owners of TV channels try to convince us of the opposite.
And however, even considering it as a show, as I said, maybe sometimes a show
with thrill and drama is more interesting then a technically perfect but
uninteresting show. Of course people may like one or the other, as people may
like love story movies or thriller movies....and in this case Brasil's easy wins
are like love story movies, while the match Italy -Australia was like a
thriller.
Usually Italy at world and european cups doesn't play a "spectacular"
football, but (at least in the matcher where you are in or out) its matches are
always thrilling and dramatic, which, after all, is not that bad....expecially
when you win!

Wow! Phew!
Now where was I ...
oh yeah, appreciate all that you said there mkcerusky. Interesting what you say
about the coach Sacchi, because of course all Aussies know that without Guus
Hiddink we would not have played half as well, and would have been lucky to win
any games. A good coach must be worth their weight in gold. Roberto Baggio was
indeed a fantastic player and I used to watch him when I was in England at the
time.
You might be surprised to hear that a number of my mates reckoned that the best
team won on the night, and that if we couldn't score against 10 men then that
was that.
And yes all the Italian players were very sporting and it was a great game to
watch from that aspect alone. Very different to the Croatian babies.
On a different note I have just this minute come away from the TV reporting 5 or
6 retired judges have been convened to hear match fixing charges that have laid
against several major teams like Juventus, Inter Milan etc.
Cricket will take a long time to forget the actions of Hanse Cronje. This is a
sad day for Italian soccer and I hope that it comes down to being due to only a
few players. The amount of money kicking around is wild and with the amount the
players receive legitimately I am disappointed they feel the need to cheat like
that (assuming the allegations are proven).
mkcerusky Report This Comment Date: June 29, 2006 12:59PM
True, it is VERY sad what is happening to italian soccer right now...or better,
it is vey sad what happened in the past years, and it is a good thing that now
it came out, and we hope things will be cleared up.
However, it is not the players who are involved in it, but mainly team managers
and administrators jointly with refereee. At the moment no plaier has been
directly investigated for this scandal.
It turned out that Juventus had set up a complicated system for controlling
referees and thus win championships, and other teams areinviolved, but the trail
of the sports justice system has just began today, so we'll see in the next week
what happens.
Ah, the ex. Juventus administrator Moggi isalso imputed for kidnapping (don't
know if it is the right word) a referee, as he locked him in a room after a
match because he hadn't "behaved"...this is quiteheavy, I think.
....we'll see what happens....
