I'm not anti religion or anything, but does the catholic church need all that money tied up in buildings when there are so many starvingpeople in the world. Churches everywhere have a lot of money tied up in buildings that are used once a week. At least some of the modern churches are using their buildings during the week now.

I mostly agree with you GAK67, however it must be said that many catholic organizations do a lot to help starving people.
Moreover, in the case of what you see in these two pictures I published, it is what remains of the anchient Vatican, when it was a real state with a big territory, so it was not just a matter of religion; all the states of the past centuries have left us great buildings.

I've seen plenty of other churches,ie the Mormon church in Salt Lake City, which are just as lavish. The only difference is people like Michaelangelo VOLUNTEERED to paint the ceilings in the Vatican hundreds of years ago.

Are you sure that Michelangelo volunteered? ...I am afraid he was paid very well, but I'll do some searches to check smiling

[www.geocities.com] Read this page and decide for yourself if he wasn't a volunteer.

He was supposed to get paid, but when the Pope didn't pay him, he did not complain or even ask for the money. Sounds like a volunteer to me.smiling

...well...he wanted money, and I would like to stress the following excerpt from the smae page:
"If Michelangelo did not accept the contract offered by the pope, then in anger Julius would eliminate him as a favored artist in the Vatican".

Stunning contribution to mans creativity regardless of the religious implications.

this was one of the main reasons that Protestism was created, the protest against the extreme opulence and dictarian rule of the catholic church. I don't deny it's beauty, but i'd rather the time and labour was spent on furthering mankind and looking after those less fortunate.
