JATO or RATO. Jet-fuel Assisted Take-Off or Rocket Assisted Take-Off. Used for
overloaded aircraft to get em off the ground or short runway conditions to just
get em off the ground at all.
I know. I was in US military aircraft ground crew for 3 years. Every day was a
free airshow. I even got to see some real airshows for free. Some of the best 3
years of my life in retrospect.
Sorry people, did not mean to start anything. My Father flew a Plane called
"The Hustler" I remember the name, and I remember the first time he
took me to see one. It scared the shit out of me. As I said it was huge, engines
that were almost as long as the wings,(or it seemed to me at least) and that
pod,I remember that friken pod. Anyway there had to be a plane out there like
it.
That's a B-58 Hustler pictured by woberto. I should've known better to trust my
memory in the first place. BlaX3 got the B-57 Canberra in this post [plus613.net]
It's no big deal Anon. I always have to look things up to make sure anymore
because my brain is pretty much mush too Quasi. The hustler is a pretty cool
looking plane. If I'd have seen one when I was a little kid I'm sure it would've
impressed the hell out of me too. Shit, they all impress the hell out of me now.
Aircraft are fantastic. I'm no expert or even an enthusiast proper but I sure
like aircraft and was lucky enough to spend 3 years in the Navy working on them
and got to see a lot of em. I loved that part of being in the service.
