" Lather was thirty years old today,
And Lather came foam from his tongue.
He looked at me eyes wide and plainly said,
Is it true that I'm no longer young?
And the children call him famous,
what the old men call insane,
And sometimes he's so nameless,
That he hardly knows which game to play...
Which words to say...
And I should have told him, "No, you're not old."
And I should have let him go on...smiling...baby-wide."

This was not the first time that Ted's irrational fear and hatred of field mice
and ground squirrels had ruined an evening at the outdoor theater...

"Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel.
Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague
and uncertain. Doctor says 'Treatment is simple. Great clown Pagliacci is in
town tonight. Go and see him. That should pick you up.' Man bursts into tears.
Says 'But, doctor...I am Pagliacci.'"
