Quasimodo (the other one) had been on the job, ringing the bells of Notre Dame
every day for a couple of years and was exhausted. He asked the Cardinal for a
holiday and thinking this was a reasonable request, but having no one to take
Quasi's place, put an ad in the paper for the temp job. Times were tough, so
there were a lot of applicants, but when asked to demonstrate their bell ringing
abilities they all failed miserably.
One day a homeless amnesiac showed up at the cathedral asking to be given a
chance to try out for the position. Feeling dubious about this prospect, but
becoming desparate to give Quasi a break, the priest in charge of the hiring
decided to give the man a try. They climbed to the bell tower and to the
priest's amazement the man flung himself against the bells face first, but the
beauty of the tone of the bells rivaled that of Quasi's bell ringing. When the
man finished, the priest was concerned for his health, but apparently suffered
no ill effects from his efforts, so the amnesiac was given the job.
The man performed his bell ringing admirably until the day before Quasi was to
return from holiday. It was a very stormy day, the floor of the bell tower was a
wet mess, and when the substitute ringer went to hurl himself against the bells
he slipped and plummented to his death. It was a horrible scene but as such
scenes do it soon gathered a crowd of gawkers. The priest pushed his way through
the milling people, disheartened to find the poor amnesiac laying there dead on
the floor in a massive pool of blood. The priest dutifully gave the man his last
rites and as he finished a policeman arrived and asked, "Who is this
man?"
The tearful priest replied, "I don't know, but his face sure rings a
bell."
