I think there's a fairly long bow being drawn there between meeting and knowing somebody.
I've met and greeted a thousand people in formal or business settings and have no idea who they are 5 seconds later.
Though I guess there was enough familiarity for the photographer to have known who it was immediately and realise they had indeed met.
