You do not have to give up God to get that same feeling, just give up all churches and worship God in any manner you choose in your own heart. It is churches which control people not God. God wants you to believe the way you choose to not the way other people want you to. This is why he gave us free will, it is the churches which try to take our free will away. You even have the freedom to not believe if you choose to.
