The cut and paste is the first sign of a joke once you snopes it.
There is a big difference between a "compound made from" and the expression "white pulp is eaten out of hand".
The fruit will give you none of the useful compound because it won't survive your gut.
Further research shows that the compound tested came from an insect related to this tree and not the fruit itself.
Either way, if you have to extract a compound or make a compound from something then it can be patented. And would be.
When I have a sore throat, I eat ginger, $3.49 per kilo.
But that doesn't stop billions of idiots spending $100 to $5000 per kilo on lozenges and other medicines.
