Philips invented the compact cassette in 1962. Serious consideration of the medium for quality audio use was not realized until late 70's when Dolby and CRO2 tapes came along.

BTW, there were 8 track cartridge recorders too. They weren't as widespread as R2R or cassette but they were available.

Recently I was given an old stereo combo that includes receiver, turntable, cassette recorder and an 8 track recorder. It's a real cheapo brand and I haven't tested it yet but it's kinda cool just to have.
