Regarding the accuracy of this... I know it's hard to conceive but remember, while the Pacific ocean is 10-15,000 km across in places the average depth is only 3.8km (2.35 miles). That makes it > 2600 times wider than it is deep. They are pretty thin layers. Let me put that into perspective for you.

Tin foil is 0.2mm thick. If you cut a piece of tin foil 520mm (20.5 inches) long, then you have about the same thickness to width ratio as the average dimensions of the Pacific ocean.
