That was "War of the Worlds" not "The Day the Earth Stood Still". In "THe Day the Earth Stood Still" the alien stepped out of his ship with a gift and was promptly shot because a soldier thought the gift was a weapon of some sort. Of course he then told us to get our shit together before we start exploring the universe and spreading our nonsense around or they were going to fry us.
