When I was living in the redwoods I found a turtle crawling in the brush. It was not a huge one, only about 6" shell. Me and a friend figured it was probably an escaped pet and figured it was some kind of box turtle. I thought about taking it home and taking care of it since I don't think they are native to that area but thought it better to let it fend for itself and let nature take its course. We asked around the area if anyone lost a pet turtle but nobody knew anything about it.
