That's a possibility PJ. When they open the way they're made the jaws stay in the same position and just expand. I thought of that too but the ring spreaders I've seen kinda cup the ends of the rings and these have completely flat faced outer jaws.
I also wondered if they might be some kinda tool for spreadin external snap rings, but again these are really WTFs to me too, so ....
