I think the press pretty much ruined him, and he did the rest. We have to understand it's a human being we're talking about, and nothing less than a supreme showman whose amazing career spanned decades, tragically culminating in a sad and unworthy demise. Too bad.
I was never a fan, but did find his music and stage performances entertaining.
