It does not really run on thin air. It runs on thick air. It takes a bit on energy to compress air and the pressure is just a way to store electric energy. The good news is that it is lighter than batteries and when it is out of air, you don't have the weight of heavy batteries when you are pushing the car home.
It is appropriate that these look like toys, because they are toy and not genuine solutions to transport needs.
