I was told a few years back on a trip to Alaska that this kind of brilliant blue ice is caused when it is under such tremendous pressure inside a glacier that the air bubbles in it are literally compressed out and, since air-free ice absorbs every color in the spectrum except for blue, the blue is reflected back to our eyes.
Our guide said it best when he referred to icebergs like this one as, "pieces of the sky that fell into the water."
