I went to the commenoration of Armistice day today. For those who are historically challenged, Armistice day is Nov 11 and is the day WWI ended. Cambridge - the town I live in - has the largest armistice day commemoration in the country. New Zealand's last battle in WWI was the liberation of a French village called Le Quesnoy, which is now a sister town of Cambridge.

As I was listening to the commemoration service and watching the laying of the wreaths, etc, I noticed kids running around playing, just down the street there was a market happening, with buskers and entertainers, and I thought momentarily that why were the people not stopping and remembering the sacrifices those old diggers (an affectionate term in Australia and New Zealand for WWI soldiers) made for them. When I thought about it though, while they may not have been remembering them, they were honouring them by exercising the very freedoms they fought for.
