it's hard to say that they would have evolved a certain way w/o knowing their mating habits, life span, environment changes, was food plentiful in their environment, the list goes on and on. the only thing you can suppose about the life and times of any extinct animals is what they were found with. you could say that the spines wre for grown for defense or maybe as a show of manhood for mating purposes. any more is just speculation.
