God created people in is own image (perhaps in a very lengthy evolutionary process; who cares) then people promptly began trying to make God into their own image in an effort to rationalize whatever atrocious acts they wanted to perform. Religion can be and should be a peaceful, positive force, but people of most religions have twisted the true purpose of religion to justify their own evil acts. Religion isn't necessarily bad, it's what people do to it that makes it appear bad.
