Stories like that pretty much sum up the bond that aviators have for one another, regardless of which side they're on. I read a story some years ago about a P-51 pilot who shot out an engine of an ME-262 Luftwaffe jet fighter, then followed the struggling jet down through a rolling field, where it disappeared into a forest. The P-51 pilot veered off, and looked downward for any signs of an impact explosion and the resulting plume of smoke, but there wasn't any. For more than 50 years, the P-51 pilot pondered the fate of the ME-262 pilot. Stories of that encounter were told by veteran pilot's groups, and the Luftwaffe pilot (who survived the crash landing) heard about it through a veterans group that connects former adversaries with each other. The two pilots were reunited in Germany...once enemys, now friends for life.
