People are the top of the food chain so we can do what we like to the animals of the Earth. To me pets are just another handy food source but to other loosers they are a poor substitute for human contact (says me writing in an online forum).
As for disease, there is probably enough antiseptic in that sputum bubble above to clear up a moderate case of herpes.
