According to Zidane and Materazzi this is not true.
Zidane only said that Materazzi told him bad words concerning the women of his family (namily sister and maybe wyfe). This are things that happen always during football mathces, but it almost never happens that one has a reaction like that of Zidane. Now, only because he is French and Materazzi is Italian it turns out that Zidane is the victim and Materazzi the aggressor, while it is exactly the opposite.
When two years ago Totti spitted on the face of the danish player Poulsen no one aoutside Italy even thought of investigating why Totti did that and nobody questioned what how Poulsen provocated Totti, and Totti got disqualified for a long time. Why in that case, for only a spit, Totti was the aggressor, and now, for a much heavy physical aggression Zidane is considered to be the victim?
I find this pathetic.
