hey nancy: ther's no way we can expect every immigrant to speak english before coming to america, but expecting them to make an effort to learn is not to much to ask. every country i've been to the people look down on you if you don't put forth the effort to converse in their language. some won't give you the time of day. it's not racist in any way. it's a point of respect for that person and his/her heritage.
