But a sphere would give you the centrifugal "gravity" in the middle, and a nice, even gradation of that gravity towards the ends... so you wouldn't have the shock of doing something at 1.0 Earth Gravity, and then suddenly moving to 0.2 Earth Gravity when you exit a cylinder. Just a thought.
Pretty picture though.
