Why would the living area need to be a sphere? It seems that a cylinder would be more logical since centrifugal force would only create "artificial gravity" along the interior walls of the craft as it rotates. The closer you got to the axis, the less "gravity" there would be -- so the sphere might as well be a cylinder.
