The lightening travels along the outside of the fuselage. As this is made of aluminium, it is a superb conductor of electricity and hence little, if any, heat is produced. This means that little, if any, damage is done. Furthermore, the fuselage acts as a Farraday cage (look it up) which completely protects everything, including occupants, inside the aircraft.
