How about this....the prop on an F4U was about 18 feet in diameter. To keep this enormous prop from hitting the ground, the landing gear would have to be much longer (and weaker) if it were not for the gull wings...strength is crucial when slamming repeatedly onto a carrier deck. My Grandfather still flies his.
