The Nazis were responsible for the industrialized slaughter of millions of Jews, as well as others deemed untermensch such as gypsies and slavs. The Japanese killed millions of Chinese. I think it was something like 7 million. The U.S. was took a huge part in bringing these nightmare regimes down. It is hard to comprehend how much we owe these people who risked and gave their lives. When I watched contemporary war films like Saving Private Ryan, it really hit me how much courage and selflessness these Americans displayed when they charged out of those landing craft and stormed those machine gun nests while mortars were tearing them apart. The landings during the island hopping offensicve against the Japanese were worse. I wondered if I really could have done that myself. It's one thing to sit back with our comfortable lives now and think that we could, but it must have been so terrifying that we cannot comprehend it. One time a hunter shot a high powered rifle and it ricoched off something and it buzzed right over my head. I could really sense the incredible power in that projectile and it scared the piss out of me. I seemed like that thing could rip my head right off. I can't imagine what it would be like having people AIM those at me trying to kill me.
