BAY MINETTE, Ala. (AP) — Authorities in south Alabama say a gas station employee used a cricket bat to chase away a would-be robber who brandished a toy gun.

The Baldwin County Sheriff's office says the suspect entered Bee Gee's gas station near Bay Minette Saturday afternoon and tried to use the fake weapon to steal money.

Sheriff's Cpl. Mike Gaull tells the Press-Register of Mobile that the employee noticed the gun had an orange tip on the barrel and grabbed the cricket bat. The suspect then ran out of the store without any money.

The 22-year-old suspect was arrested and charged with first-degree robbery.

GULF COVE — Authorities arrested two men Wednesday suspected of stealing appliances from a foreclosed home.

William Eugene Goff, 33, 10000 block of Asbury Avenue, and Toby D. Angelo, 30, of the 6000 block of Cromwell Street — both of Englewood East — were charged with burglary and grand theft.

A Charlotte County Sheriff's Office deputy stopped the men's pick up around 5:11 p.m. because of defective brake lights. The truck had a trailer loaded with appliances, that were traced to a foreclosed home in South Gulf Cove.

According to detectives, Angelo reportedly entered the home using a key obtained from his job as a mortgage field service technician in securing foreclosed homes.

Both men were taken to the Charlotte County Jail, where they posted $7,500 bond each.

Quinlan, Texas
Police Arrest 2 In Aluminum Door Thefts

Multiple charges were filed against 2 men after they were arrested Monday afternoon in connection with the theft of aluminum doors.

Quinlan Police Chief Johnny Thornburg said officers acted on a tip from a concerned citizen. Thornburg said the theft occurred in broad daylight at 108 N Kykendall St. He said the caller reported that 2 men were loading aluminum doors onto their truck. Officer David Arndt responded and Chief Thornburg said all that was required of Arndt was a short walk around the block from the station as the address given was only around the corner from the station and on the opposite end of the block. Thornburg said John Guskey and Jay Lynn Ruffin, both of Quinlan were arrested at the scene.

Both men were charged with pubic intoxication and theft over $1500/under $20,000. Guskey was also charged with unlawfully carrying a firearm.

US police arrested a man who they said made up a story about being robbed to explain why he was walking around a city park naked.

Police spokeswoman Katie Flood said the man was arrested and jailed Wednesday night on suspicion of indecent exposure and making a false statement to police.

Police found the man naked in a Nebraska city park on Monday. He told police a man with a gun tried to rob him, but he did not have any money, so the robber took his clothes.

Flood said the man really took off his clothes because he was hot. He walked around naked for about an hour, but afterward, he couldn't find his clothes.

In Sydney recently...

A British backpacker rescued after 12 days in near-freezing conditions admits he was "a total idiot" to venture ill-prepared into the rugged Blue Mountains bush.

Jamie Neale, 19, says he lived off bush tucker, including seeds and weeds, and kept warm under strips of bark when he lost his way during a 10-hour bushwalk on July 3.

After 12 days in the bush, and in apparent good health despite his ordeal, Mr Neale stumbled across hikers who led him to safety.

Mr Neale re-enacted his trek for the Nine Network's 60 Minutes program, which paid him $200,000 for his story.

Mr Neale told the program he was badly under-prepared for the trip.

"I admit I'm a total idiot," he said.

"In the UK you can walk for a day and you'd end up in a pub.

"Out here you can get lost so easily and that. You should respect the fact, be more prepared and think about what you are doing a lot more."

Mr Neale set off on the walk with two bread rolls and a small bottle of water.

He left behind his mobile phone, was not carrying a safety beacon and was only wearing light clothing.

He told no one where he was going.

A 42-year-old Bolivian man who fell asleep under an ant-infested tree has been killed by insect bites.

Beni city Police Chief Rolando Ramos says that farmworker Santiago Ortiz had apparently been drinking before sitting down beneath a Palo Santo tree - a type noted for its aromatic wood and for hosting a particularly aggressive sort of ant.

Ramos said on Tuesday that when police reached the scene, the man was already dead, but swarms of ants were still crawling across his body.

This story hits a little close to home. My youngest son is nineteen and has worked at the local Goodwill store since he was a sophomore in high school (no, he's not challenged, just a regular kid) and has found many unusual and disgusting things left for donation. In two weeks he begins basic training in the US Air Force and one of the things he thinks he'd like to get into there is explosives disarming and disposal (which sometimes makes me think maybe he is challenged).

ARVADA, Colo. (AP) — A land mine found in a suburban Denver Goodwill donation box forced the evacuation of a strip mall.

The rectangular, olive-green box with the words "Front Toward Enemy" raised the suspicions of Goodwill workers Tuesday.

Arvada police say the Claymore land mine didn't go off in the donation box and no one was hurt. A bomb squad disposed of the device.

Police Sgt. Jeff Monzingo says it's unclear whether the device was operational or where it came from. No suspects have been identified.

Claymore mines were widely used during the Vietnam war.

Schwarzenegger's huge knife gets them all atwitter
July 23, 2009 - 12:15PM [media.smh.com.au]
California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has posted a video on his Twitter page which shows him brandishing a huge hunting knife as he talks about the state's budget crisis.

Schwarzenegger, under fire for a budget plan announced this week that will see $US15 billion ($A18.39 billion) in spending cuts from services such as education and health care, said the light-hearted video was intended as a bit of fun.

In the video, posted on Twitter on Tuesday in the US, the governor is sitting at his desk in the Capitol admiring a 60cm-long folding knife before looking up to thank followers for their budget ideas.

Governor with giant knife
During a recording for Twitter, Governor Schwarzenegger opens his address welding a giant hunting knife.
The Austrian-born governor says he likes one suggestion to autograph a fleet of state-owned vehicles being put up for auction.

The video had received more than 33,000 hits by Wednesday afternoon local time.

The movie-star-turned-politician brushed off suggestions from reporters in Sacramento that the video might be viewed by some as being insensitive.

"You know, you sent a governor to Sacramento - not El Stiffo, like some of the past were, but you sent someone that is a little bit more entertaining and has a little bit more fun with the whole thing," Schwarzenegger said.

"Not that I have fun with making the cuts; they sadden me. But fun with the job itself, because I think it is the most rewarding job that I've ever done, even though with a huge responsibility.

"So just relax and have a little bit of a sense of humour."

California legislators are set to approve the spendings at a vote on Thursday which will pass a budget aimed at closing the state's $US26.3 billion ($A32.25 billion) deficit.

Government stupidity in action

The night after Fort Myers Beach fired its town manager as news surfaced that his wife is an adult video actress, residents questioned why Scott Janke had been terminated so quickly after the revelation — or why he had been terminated at all.

“I’m very puzzled about the need for emergency action since our manager has been married since October,” said beach resident Pat Smith during an emergency council meeting Wednesday night. “What I don’t also understand is why it matters so much what the spouse of the mayor is doing so long as it’s legal.”

Town Council’s response was that the profession of Janke’s wife, Anabela Mota — whose screen name is Jazella Moore — brings an inappropriate image and negative attention to the island, which prides itself on being family-friendly.

Although some residents are upset, there is little Janke can do to get his job back: Town charter states council may remove the town manager for any reason with a majority vote of the council.

Council unanimously voted to terminate Janke’s contract Tuesday night, hours after Mayor Larry Kiker had heard about the erotic exploits of the woman Janke married seven months after he became manager.

Wednesday night, with two of the five council members monitoring the meeting by phone, it worked toward finding a replacement for Janke, naming Public Works Director Jack Green interim town manager and giving an end-of-the-week deadline to finish all termination work with Janke.

Janke, 55, declined comment on the situation, saying he needed a few days to sort things out.

According to Adult Industry News, a Web site that follows the adult entertainment industry, Janke married Mota in October 2008. The Web site features pictures of Mota and Janke riding together in a car on the Fourth of July, strings of red, white and blue beads around their necks.

A Google search indicates Mota’s most popular video as Jazella Moore is “My Best Friends Mom.” On her Web site, she calls herself a “priestess of the erotic arts.”

“We did everything we could not to judge,” Kiker said. But, he later added, “It’s not about him or her. It’s about the town.”

A Melbourne father who tried to burn down his house while his daughters and wife were inside has been jailed for four years.

Angry his wife had failed to make him lunch, Rajah Theiveneraeas, 54, poured petrol on a staircase and set it alight. His wife Vasangha and daughters Amviga, 21, and Anoja, 16, were forced to flee through the flames.

They suffered superficial burns.

The court heard Theiveneraeas had been drinking heavily the day before the fire and had an argument with his eldest daughter about respect.

Victorian County Court Judge John Nixon said Theiveneraeas was out of control but not psychiatrically disturbed.

"It was an inexcusable, senseless, destructive and dangerous criminal act on your part," he said.

Theiveneraeas must serve a minimum two years and three months in prison before being eligible for parole.

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a man, who had been sleeping in a Dumpster, sustained minor injuries after he was picked up by a garbage truck along with the trash.

Authorities say that when firefighters and paramedics arrived, they heard Kevin Hallaran, 52, banging on the metal sides of the sanitation truck asking for help.

Hallaran had been sleeping inside a Dumpster behind a restaurant Sunday night and had been unknowingly dumped along with the garbage from restaurants and other businesses into the truck early Monday.

A sanitation department employee had not yet activated the truck's compactor after he mistakenly dumped Hallaran inside.

Authorities say the compactor most likely have killed Hallaran.

The vehicle was stopped in Lee County by a Florida Highway Patrol trooper, who discovered the marijuana plants and other drugs during a subsequent search. According to an arrest report, the pot weighed 287 grams.

Gerardo Sanchez, 57, and Lemay Trujilo, 30, both of Miami, were each charged with possession of more than 20 grams of marijuana, trafficking in marijuana, possession of amphetamine, trafficking in amphetamine, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a firearm during a felony. A Sudanese woman faces 40 lashes and a fine of 250 Sudanese pounds ($US100) if found guilty.
Ms Hussein said she was at a restaurant on July 3 when police came in and ordered 13 women wearing trousers to follow them to the police station.
Ten of the women were summoned to a police station two days later and were lashed 10 times each, according to Hussein.
She wore the same clothes to court as when she was arrested - moss-green slacks with a loose floral top and green headscarf.

Police have also cracked down on a woman journalist, Amal Habbani, after she wrote an article condemning Hussein's treatment.
Habbani wrote an article for Ajrass Al-Horreya newspaper following the arrests entitled Lubna, a case of subduing a woman's body.
"I am waiting for a decision," Habbani said after she was charged with defaming police, a charge which can carry a fine of up to several hundred thousand dollars.

In December 2007, British teacher Gillian Gibbons faced 40 lashes after being convicted of insulting religion by allowing her pupils to name a teddy bear Mohammed.
Gibbons, 54 at the time, was eventually sentenced to 15 days in prison but was pardoned by Sudanese President Omar al-Beshir following the mediation of two Muslim members of Britain's upper house of parliament.

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Authorities say a central Florida man was arrested for having sex with his dog.

The Orange County Sheriff's Office reports that 21-year-old Laszlo Arsenio Horvath was charged Thursday with animal abuse. Deputies say the dog's injuries were so bad that it had to be put down. Authorities began investigating Horvath last month after receiving a tip about possible animal abuse.

Horvath was being held without bail set.

LAKELAND, Fla. (AP) — A Lakeland rapper is singing his way to prison.

Authorities say 20-year-old Antavio Johnson raps about killing two Lakeland police officers and refers to a Polk County sheriff's deputy and police dog killed in the line of duty. The song is called "Kill Me a Cop."

Johnson — whose stage name is T.O. — pleaded no contest to two counts of corruption by threat of a public servant and was sentenced on July 24 to two years in prison.

Authorities say that while being held at the Polk County Jail for violating probation on a cocaine possession charge, Johnson told a detective he wrote and recorded the song because he felt harassed by the police officers.

MANATEE (AP) — Authorities say a Florida motorist who used fake police lights to get through traffic was busted after an off-duty sheriff's deputy pulled over to get out of the way and became suspicious.

Manatee County Detective Jeff Lane was driving on a Florida insterstate on July 18 when he saw the lights behind him and pulled over. When he saw that the passing car was a black BMW with no police markings, Lane became suspicious and wrote down the license plate number.

The sheriff's office said Lane connected the vehicle to a 34-year-old Sarasota man. The detective went to the Publix where the man worked Tuesday, and authorities say he admitted using the lights.

The man was arrested and charged with impersonating an officer. He was released Wednesday on bail.

BERLIN (AP) — An Audi sedan written off by an elderly German woman as stolen two years ago has resurfaced — in her neighbor's garage beneath a thick layer of dust.

Police said Thursday the 82-year-old from the northern city of Hildesheim took the car in for repairs two years ago and had the mechanics drive it back to her house and park it in her garage.

She got the keys and papers from her mailbox, but when she went to get the car it was nowhere to be found. So she reported it stolen.

Fast forward to Wednesday when her neighbor went to clean up his unused garage so it could be rented. He found the car under "a centimeter-deep coating of dust."

It didn't take police long to piece together that the mechanics had parked it in the wrong garage.

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Next time, the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party says it will closely check its online links before sending news releases.

The party had to recall a statement Thursday criticizing Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty because it mistakenly linked to a profane YouTube video.

DFL Executive Director Andrew O'Leary says the link came from an outside researcher who had not checked the link. The party did not double-check the link before sending the release, O'Leary said.

O'Leary says the party "obviously made a mistake." He says the statement was sent only to the news media, not the public.

The statement challenged Pawlenty, a potential 2012 presidential candidate, for criticizing President Barack Obama at a meeting of the Republican National Committee in San Diego.

WELLINGTON, Fla. (AP) -- A South Florida man says he made a half-million-dollar mistake.

Sixty-nine-year-old Louis Tolentino of Wellington says he lost a winning scratch-off lottery ticket valued at $500,000. A clerk at the store where he bought the ticket Wednesday confirms it was a winner and that Tolentino was directed to cash it in at the lottery office in West Palm Beach.

But somewhere between the store and the lottery office, the Gold Rush ticket disappeared.

Tolentino says he panicked and retraced his steps, but it still hasn't turned up. Without his signature on it, anyone who finds it can turn it in. Now, he's just hoping it lands in the hands of a Good Samaritan.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — An alligator capture has lead to the arrests of some north Florida apartment tenants who forgot to hide their drugs.

According to a report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, wildlife officers received a tip that two gators were being held captive in an apartment in Tallahassee. The officers went to the apartment and spoke with the tenants, who then allowed for the officers to go inside and retrieve the gators.

The report says the tenants had left drugs and drug paraphernalia in plain view. So the wildlife officers called in the Leon County Sheriff's Office, which took over the narcotics investigation.

The report does not specify how large the gators were, identify the tenants or specify their drug-related charges.
