Reckon you can setup a raid array, define a logical volume group & configure a remote system console? smiling smiley

Or even just the remote console and give me access to something?

Reason I'm asking is I'm looking at a new server for the sites, but it's in the US, and I'm not paying for intercontinental shipping. Twice. smiling smiley So I need some arms and feet stateside somewhere to help me with at least getting the remote console running so I can do the install myself, or doing the install & configuring the console for me, before shipping it to a colo company..

It's not a done deal yet, I haven't bought anything, but I'm looking

smiling smiley Stuff isn't that hard, but at the worst I'm sure it can't be too hard to factory reset the remote console & give me access winking smiley it's more the physical stuff I need.

There's a race on live now I think.. probably finished actually. Busy watching football (north melbourne vs west coast) with my wife, good game.

I may have found a better server option, from a guy who's told me in the past he'll configure the remote console for me, so I might be able to get it shipped straight to the colo centre if I decide to buy one.. so we'll see. Nice looking boxes.

What I really want is 2 new servers, one for storage and one for processing/hosting, but that's all a bit expensive. We need sponsorship smiling smiley

i have a great spot right next to my box and a good connect to run it off of. grinning smiley

If you actually had a connection fast enough I'd be tempted winking smiley

It'd be so much cheaper to host off a standalone server without having to pay the premiums for rack mounted, 1RU servers. Once you get to enterprise boxes the price goes through the roof; bang for buck, they're terrible. The servers I'm looking at now cost more than my desktop PC, which is totally top of the line. The servers are 2nd hand and probably 4+ years old now. But since you pay per RU (about 1" of height) the smaller the box the cheaper it is to run.

Once I get my 100/40mbps fibre connection next year (if the Australian NBN plan actually goes through to completion in my area) I've considered at the very least hosting plus613 at home. Hosting porn in Australia is illegal so not much good to me for the other side.

Yeah, with that upload speed we'd saturate your link and it's be unusable smiling smiley that's cool, happy to pay for hosting at least for now, but thanks for the offer :$

Unfortunately data transfer and disk space are nowhere near enough smiling smiley

New core DB server will be online in a few days, looking forward to it. Maybe I'll be able to backup the database without bringing the server screaming to its knees...

That would be great. Sundays blow goats here. (insert DK joke here)

Yeah. Unfortunately it won't be online in time for this Sunday, but maybe I'll just disable it for tomorrow.. Then again with the broken RAID array if we lose another disk we lose all the data so a backup is probably important.

FedEx has picked up the server, so it's on its way to destination. I think it's just road transfer though. Estimated delivery July 18th, it'll probably take 2-3 days to build it and get it online, so maybe in time for next Sunday.

It should be good, and will hopefully massively speed up the site.

Nah, much as I hate em don't kill the backups. I'll wait smiling smiley Not worth the risk. RAID should be re-defined as Risky Array of Interdependent Discs.

Hopefully things in general have been faster for everybody lately, but tonight I've added online another image server into the farm.

Please let me know if you find anything more broken than normal, particularly thumbnails in the gallery & images themselves.

24 hours in, seems snappier to me.

90,000 images served off the new system in 24 hours. That's just over 1 per second, snoozing along. Not bad (since it's just 1 server).

I was unable to view the site for about 10 hours today. First it was just a plain white screen then an "unable to display" error message.

Yeah, wasn't related to this upgrade. We've had an issue recently with the DB server falling off the network. It's been identified as a faulty switch, which has been replaced today.

Hopefully no more issues.....
