You guys may have seen a haka performed by a NZ sports team - maybe the All Blacks, but the haka is a part of the wider culture here. This video shows 2 NZ Army battalions doing a haka for 3 fellow soldiers that were recently killed in Afghanistan. It's just something I thought I'd share with you guys.

The photo above is taken from the NZ Army website and is not of the haka performed in the video, but is from a similar haka for another soldier also killed in the line of duty.

berto - way to take a communal heartfelt display of grief, respect and honour and cheapening it.

I think using it for sporting events cheapens it

I would never disrespect a national anthem.
But thanks to the All Blacks, Haka can take a long walk off a short pier.
Even though this one performed by the army is completely different.

I kind of agree with you pulse. Don't get me wrong, I love the All Black haka, but I'm sentient enough to realise that is because I was brought up with it. It does however seem to be done for the spectacle of it now rather than for any cultural reason, and that cheapens it.

However, the NZ Rugby 7's team, for example, only performs the haka if they win a tournament. NZ Olympic gold medal winners will get a haka from their team mates when they return to the olympic village. I don't think those instances cheapen the haka.

For an outsider who doesn't know shit about it, it looks kind of foolish but can imagine it probably looks kinda dumb to anyone who doesn't know what it is suppose to signify. Even after looking it up it still appears odd to me. It might be something best kept to yourselves in any case.
