After being used as a dumping site for radioactive waste for decades, Lake Karachay, located in the southern Ural mountains in western Russia, has become the most polluted spot in the world. In 1968, during drought conditions, the wind carried radioactive dust away from the lake’s dried area, irradiating half a million people.

The radiation level in the region near where radioactive effluent is discharged into the lake was 600 röntgens per hour in 1990, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Natural Resources Defense Council, more than sufficient to give a lethal dose to a human within an hour.

This is a night time picture of the lake, right?

I wonder how well a lead canoe would float.

Floating is about water displacement not the buoyancy of materials.

BTW, I like your pics better Q. It's nice to get a glimpse of some reality here once in a while.

But an object still has to be bouyant enough to overcome it's sheer weight which, granted, is easier than one might think. I know there have been concrete ships in the past, but lead is pretty damned heavy, especially enough of it to make a canoe. You can take the first ride & let me know how it goes, Blah.

I can't believe how stupid and wasteful they were to spoil such a beautiful place. I'd love to canoe there, if not for the deadliness of the place.

So apparently I lied! The site I got it from has the wrong photo for the caption. Lake Karachay obviously exists, but that photo is not it. That photo is of Crater Lake in Oregon and the little island is called "Phantom Ship".

So Quasi, canoe away... let me know when I can join you!

I sure thought it was Crater Lake when I saw it at first but I kept my mouth shut for a change. I don't think they allow any boats of any kind on the lake at all anymore. They used to have park boat rides to Wizard Island but I think they stopped that too, so the canoe trip is probably out Quasi.
