Actually they want to choose their own government which would probably be am
islamic state. That is why the Bush administration wanted to control who was a
"legitimate" candidate in the recent election.
But it doesn't really matter. The Iraqi government will fall within 2 years
after the Us military leaves. The Iraqis will not defend the government no
matter how well trained they are. They believe Allah is all they need. That is
why this folly of democracy in Iraq is so stupid.

The world is different today. With TV, news spreads fast. And political pressure
from abroad and here in the US will force US troop withdrawal. Especially once
the insurgents figure out that they can topple the government once the US
leaves.
Politicians are being put on the spot to say that Iraqi troops are being trained
and will be able to secure their own nation soon. Otherwise talk of Iraqi troops
is BS. that will not sit well with voters.
Not many americans will accept the US military being used as mercenary policeman
in Iraq. So full withdrawal will occur before the 08 elections. Maybe sooner
when republicans lose a significant number of seats in congress and
governorships in 06.
The all out civil war (they have a controlled civil war now) in Iraq is a
certainty. There is no stopping it.
If the US decides to remain in Iraq the current civil war will not end. It will
continue for decades. The question is will american citizens tolerate losing
their sons and daughters to be a 3rd party to a civil war ? I don't think
so.
The worst case scenario is an Islamic fundamentalist wins the recent election.
Then all hell break loose. Sunni's will feel cemocracy is BS and the new iraqi
law is not worth following. Back to square 1 almost 3 years later.
