and lets not over look the fact that it was the u.s. that brought such happiness (in the form of balloons skating boards and hula hoops...etc.[sik]) to these children

Still amazes me how "unintended civilian casualties" somehow morphed into "murder of civilians" in the short period between WWII and 'Nam. Even more fascinating is the way only Americans are typically viewed as murderers in such matters but militaristic forces even blatantly using civilians as shields between themselves and other forces are not viewed similarly, eventhough such acts not only are morally unconscienable but straight-up cowardly to boot.

But, such actions serve well those who seek to vilify soldiers who have had the choice of kill or be killed foisted upon then in such instances and were left with basically a choice to have to take innocent lives as a part of their own defense or be killed themselves. I've often wondered if the bleedin heart types ever took the time to really look at the whole picture before just layin blame at the feet of a soldier who in honesty was only left with one choice in such instances?

Thanks again to, you guessed it ....Liberalism, Newspeak, Psychobabble and let's not forget those lovely folks over at Politically Correct for all their (misguided) help in such vilifications (*finger3*)

There are several layers of 'truth' here.

First the children in the photo above were injured by napalm dropped by a Vietnamese aircraft by accident. The pilot thought it was a group of fleeing enemy soldiers and bombed them after finishing a bombing run of a town. The planes IIRC were all Vietnamese however the entire attack was coordinated on intelligence from the US.

Also I agree with you Kim in that you never know what a soldier has to face in war and what he is forced to do. Only they can make the split second decision and often it is kill or be killed.

However, there are other aspects as well. Incidents like the My Lai massacre [en.wikipedia.org] don't go away in public opinion for much much longer. These probably bear greater causality for the perception of US soldiers.

The net result is there exists no pure right or wrong in war. The entire situation is just messed up which is why it should be a last resort tactic only. For the innocents in the line of fire, and the innocents we send over to pull the trigger.
