So with all the amazing technology we have access to these days, has anyone
come up with a better security system to protect our much loved possessions,
like this awesome Mustang for instance?

One thing that comes to mind is some sort of remote kill switch with GPS.

With car jackings on the rise, has anyone come up with a small remote that you keep on you (or a pin number activated by any phone)
and if by chance your car is stolen either by car jack or broken into;
you would only have to activate the remote kill switch and it stops the car engine dead and the thief goes no further.
(which could also be a bad thing if they can still see you)
Along with having a GPS fitted, if you did lose sight of your vehicle, you would be able to locate it again immediately.

I'm guessing there's already products like this on the market.
And if so, how good are they? There's a lot of clever dudes out there, both good and bad.
It would be nice to have a "fail proof" car security system for once.

kill switches are only usable by law enforcement by programs such as bait cars. it's just too dangerous for the general public to put a device out there.

Can't see how cutting a cars engine can be that dangerous.
There would definitely be some wiz kids out there who could make one
out of a mobile phone and active it by mobile phone.

I haven't heard of any laws that say you can't

Yeah, can't think of a way a car driving down the middle lane of a freeway with the kill switch pressed could possibly pose any danger. Or crossing an intersection for that matter.

Also, bear in mind when your engine cuts out, so does most of your braking power.

Back in the late 80s a company called Jacobs Electronics came up with an interesting car protection system. If a thief stole a car it allowed 'em to crank and start it (with or without the key), then a built in timer would kill all power to the ignition box and no matter how long they cranked on it, it wouldn start again until the owner entered a code.

This allowed the thief to think they were stealin the car and get it backed out of the parking space or driveway before it died, where it was now in the way of other motorists and then let 'em keep crankin away at it, tryin to get it started again, while hopefully drawing attention to themselves.

Most used car dealers here these days have an ignition kill system added so if a person is late on their car payment they can remotely disable the ignition. Most such systems are also tied to a GPS locator and will cease to allow the operator to start the car if it's been driven outside the state, and of course tell the repo dude exactly where to pick it up if they stop payin on it

That's exactly what I was thinking mrkim. Sheesh! If the car dealers can have them, why can't we?
Although I see Pulses point about "where" you cut power to the engine, sounds like the car
dealers don't give a shit about that all the same.

There's been a few recent carjackings where a toddler has still been strapped in the capsule in the back seat
when the car's been stolen. A remote kill switch would come in handy then and on most occasions the car wouldn't be
driving straight onto a high speed freeway and if it stopped in the middle of an intersection,
it's only going to draw attention to it immediately, and that's basically what you want.
Though it would be suggested to use some common sense cutting the engine remotely;
you could time it to stop safely if you still had it in your vision.

All just thoughts though.

i see it as a danger because the average person will kill switch at their earliest convenience. which could mean the thief was on the highway...loss of brakes....steering....etc causing injury to innocent people. they could be on a bridge exiting them from said bridge, killing, maiming, innocent fish in the river......now you see my point?

Yes, point well taken Fossil but there is also a very high chance that the thief
could kill and mame innocent people if he got behind the wheel of a high powered vehicle anyway.
Especially if they were being chased by the cops.
How many times have we seen stories like that on the news?
I know what you're saying has common sense and public safety in mind although I think there are times
where you just got to hedge your bets - and push the button on that kill switch.
There's just as much chance of saving someones life as there is in putting it in danger.

"Push that button god dammit!!!" :-)
