my mom would never let me have a motorcycle after a guy flew down our street (we were in a corner house at the time), his brakes failed i guess, and he broadsided a car going down the cross street launching him 20 feet or so to his death with me standing 20 feet away watching.

I wouldn't let my kids have 'em either. I cosigned for a car for my oldest son when he was about 20 and though he always made his payments when he asked me to cosign for a bike a couple of years later, just a few days after one of his brother's buddies got killed on one, I said no way. He managed to get it anyway and promptly laid it down. Fortunately he was unhurt. He just turned 30 and hasn't ridden for awhile. I also lost a good friend due to a bike accident - she seemed to be recovering well from her injuries when a couple of months after the wreck a blood clot caused her to go into a coma where she lingered for several months before passing just before the turn of the century. Fuck that. I'd love to ride but there are too many idiots on the road.

one of my mom's friend's husband is a big time neuro-surgeon, he has always said that motorcyclists pay for all his toys...and he collects vintage Ferrari's (5 in all)

My mom was a nurse for forty years and after the time she spent working in the ER before I was born she always called them murdercycles.

I had a bike for a couple years in my 20's and was fortunate enough to stay clear of trouble. Once the 'phase' passed though I sold it and have never considered one again. Makes me cringe when I see idiots weaving traffic at speed.

I'm the same way pretty much. It was a hoot when I was young and reckless and felt indestructible. Now we know better, eh? Even being very conscious and careful on a motorcycle it is potentially very high danger.

Yep, as Quasi said, too many idiots on the road. Even if you are careful you're still a sitting duck.

There's a thing now with middle age guys getting bikes for the first time. A couple of months back this guy in his 50s down in Fort Myers or Naples, Florida got a big bike and the first day he had it ran it right into his garage and killed himself.

Yeah, I'm more afraid of myself on one to be completely honest. I'd probably have to get buzzed enough somehow to muster up the courage in the first place and that is NOT a good time to do it.smileys with beer

I'm surprised to see so many states without helmet laws...see alot of riders wearing shorts and tanktops too, and alot of riders without gloves... totally lost

I used to ride motorbikes, and thankfully had no serious injuries. I did have an accident with minor injuries - was going too fast through some road works, so completely my own fault. I ruined my gloves and boots, scratched my jacket and managed to keep my helmet from hitting the ground. If I had been wearing proper protective trousers I wouldn't have had to have a doctor picking gravel out of my knee and have a scar there to this day. I still rode after that, but ALWAYS had the proper gear, even if I was going a short distance.
