I have met quite a lot of people from Texas and visited a few times. That doesn't mean all Texans are assholes, they aren't, but it's too crowded there and I don't like it. Anywhere with a greater population is going to have more assholes. You don't even need to do math to figure that out.
Ah what the hell...
Oregon avg 40 people per sq mi.
Texas avg 96.
CA a whopping 242! Wholey moley! Now that is crowded! Ok TX don't sound so bad...

The weather here isn't too bad ... till summer comes, but thankfully it's offset by pretty mild winters.

I think the early settlers here immigrated for similar reasons early immigrants to Oz did, except that we were never a penal colony. Many came to get away from the status quo that didn quite suit their nature, a spirit that continues on to this day in many of the folks here.

In my own family my great-great grandfather left his wealthy family in Tennessee to forge his own way in the new wildernesses of Texas in the mid 1800s. By my great grandfathers generation the family had mostly moved to Dallas, where every generation since has been from.

Hell yeah we Texans are a proud and boastful bunch, comes with the territory. Many people who have come from elsewhere are proud to call it home too. I even have a transplanted Russian friend and a Canadian who've spent time here and intend to retire here once their workin careers are put aside. Hell, a common bumper sticker and saying by many immigrants says/reads "I wasn't born in Texas, but I got here as fast as I could!".

You cats from elsewhere can talk all the trash you like but .... you can sit down with people all over the planet and draw the outline of Texas in the dirt and they will almost always be able to identify it as Texas. Try that with an outline of where ever you live and see if that works similarly winking

There's nothing wrong with taking pride in your state. Everyone does that pretty much. Texans just have a reputation to live up to I guess. Everyone who lives in a halfway pretty state says it's "God's country." Don't blame them. Lots of wonderful places in this country.

Oregonians and North-westerners in general have the same kind of pioneering background and spirit and we have managed (so far) to not destroy the natural beauty of the region too much. We have the same attitude of, "If you don't like it here that's great. Come for a visit and then go home."

In the past Oregon has had a VERY closed attitude towards non-native Oregonians. 37 years ago when I moved up here from California it was damn near impossible to get a job in Oregon if you were not born here. The only thing that saved my ass was when I told them my mom was born in Drain and graduated from Springfield Union HS. Then it was like, "Ok, that's good enough then." It is certainly not like that here anymore.

I agree with you Mrkim that Texas is one of the few US states that I would recognize just from it's outline - the other obvious one to me being Alaska. However I also feel there are other places in the world that would also be recognisable to anybody with a little geographic knowledge. NZ, Australia and Greenland I think are recognisable, probably because they are island nations (although interestingly I think I would struggle with other island nations, such as Iceland, Madagascar or Sri Lanka). I also think Chile with it's long thin shape would be on the list along with Thailand (it looks a little like an Elephant's head) and Italy (it looks like a boot).

As for running down Texas, I have never been there and have met few Texans (or at least few that I remember meeting) so can't really comment. It's just fun seeing you guys getting all riled up.

Pride in where you come from, or currently live, is not unique to Texas and I believe is quite common. It's also a good thing. When the first comments were posted that put Texas down I was pretty certain you guys would speak up.

Blah, the West Coast of the South Island here in NZ sounds a lot like the Oregon of old you described. I remember talking to a guy who had lived there for 30 years and he still got referred to as "the new guy", "the import" or "the foreigner". That was a while ago now, so attitudes there might have changed since too.

I live in Florida, a land populated mostly by people who've come from somewhere else, bringing their customs (and some bad habits) with them. We also have a lot of people who only winter here and spend the rest of the year "up north." My neighbor lady, who just last week went "back home" (this is the time of year of the mass exodous), doesn't realize how ridiculous she sounds crying poverty when she can afford to have two homes and travel between them several times a year. I'm not a native either but have spent my entire adult life here, almost 32 years, arriving a couple of months before I turned 20, and I don't mind the folks who bring their own customs with them but get truly riled up when they are fresh arrivals or part timers and want everything tailored to suit them. That goes for legals and illegals alike; there are a lot of great people who come here but there are a fair number of dillweeds who show up as well.

I live and work in an area that has a large South African ex-pat population. One of the women I work with (an ex South African herself) says there are two types of ex-pats - those that make the most of the new environment they have chosen to live in and the "Whenwe's". "When we were back in South Africa..." She doesn't much care for the Whenwe's and I have to agree with her.

i'm sure Florida is alot like Vegas, some tourists come there to act a fool and go home respecting nothing or nobody, but i think that happens in just about every tourist area. Texas on the other hand is so damn big and the tourist attractions are fairly separated from the average population that it's really hard to pick them out. on the other hand, people that come to live here seem to lose their respective "accents" in no time (except of course the New York asswipes, that particular dialect is intentionally annoying i'm conviced)

That wasn't intended as an insult to your integrity PJ. I know that a lot of people do that with the car registrations. I also know a lot of folks who shop across the river to save on sales tax. It's not right but it's pretty common. Sorry you took it as a personal attack but it was meant as a jab at the funnybone because so many people do that. The fucking hippie comment, that's just funnier than hell to me. I'm no hippie, that's for sure. I've worked too hard and paid too many taxes to be a hippie and I absolutely HATE patchouli oil and vegan food! GAG.

I do not agree with your assessment that 98% of my comments here are negative. I'd say maybe 50-60% are but most of those are still meant in jest. I keep the REALLY negative things I can come up with about some of the crazy things people say to myself for a couple of reason. Nothing gets accomplished and it just pisses people off, which isn't something I like doing. I at least try to make sure what I write has some redeeming humor or irony to it.

ok Blah, maybe I was too hasty in my reply but it sure seemed like an insult..alot of people don't understand the Amtrak clause and assume you are a cheat because you qualify for it and don't have to pay state income tax...
personally I think it's pretty fucked if you live in one state and work in another and have to pay income tax to the state you worked in but you don't get any of the benefits the residents do...for example, if you want to go to college in the state you work in you have to pay higher tuition because you don't live there...you don't get to vote in any of the states elections even though you pay tax to that state...out of state hunting and fishing license, etc. etc. it's bullshit.

as for the 'go back to Cali, hippy" thing, well that was just me ribbing you in the spirit of this thread spinning smiley sticking its tongue out
and yeah I concede 98% negative is too high...idk, my mom used to always tell me that if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all...but we didn't have internets then either spinning smiley sticking its tongue out

I've never understood the way some people are so proud of where they came from...saw a sticker once that said if Mexico is so fucking great why don't you go back there? makes sense to me...as an OTR driver I saw 47 of the lower 48 and it really is all the same...banks, bars, jails, post offices, wal-mart...and there's good people and assholes everywhere you go..I was really surprised a few times by both how friendly and how rude people could be..

Hey quasi, having been to Florida a cuppla times, I hafta say I really liked it there, one of the few places I've ever been I liked well enough to think about movin to. The summers are much more manageable than ours, Absolutely love all the tropical plants there and no matter where you are there it's never all that far to the coast. As a landlocked person I've always been enamored of the ocean rock
on

I made it up to Wa. and Or. about 12 yrs ago to vacation with a chic I met in Yakima. I still have some very fond memories of the "other worldliness" of the some of the sights and animals you cats have up there. After the dry and brown summer we have here it was awesome to see all the lush green scenery you guys have there even in mid July! We took an overnight road trip down into Oregon and I was really amazed by most everything there, gorgeous country Dancing Green Banana!

Having never made it to New Zealand I can only comment on what I've seen of it in movies and some of the pics I've seen online but it looks like a beautiful place too. As far as I know I've never met a Kiwi in person, guess not too many make it over this way confused smiley

Oz is another place I've never seen up close and personal but think I'd enjoy doin so. Having only met 2 Aussies they seemed very much like Texans with a decidedly different accent of course. What I have grasped of Aussies is they are similarly brash and friendly as we here are. And then, there's all the truly different scenery and animals that are native to Oz that make it very intriguing so I hope to one day see it all for myself smiling bouncing smiley

I too would like to visit Australia before I die, but the flight is entirely too long without a cigarette so guess I never will. I would love to go back to Guam where I spent two and a half years in the early '70s but alas 16 hours on a plane without a cig is just unthinkable. So I guess I will only visit somewhere I can drive too unless I get rich enough to own my own jet. I have been to many beautiful locations during my navy stent and would like to see them again but as I am getting older I doubt I ever will before I die. Would love to go to Houston and see my cousin whom I haven't seen in 20 years but probably never will. Since Natalie was killed I can't even locate Paul or Beth by email any longer because of notoriety.

Don't know about manageable summers, Kim, seems like you'd be trading hot and dry for not quite so hot but humid, humid, humid with almost daily afternoon thunderstorms. Lot's of lightning. And then there's the fact that the proximity to all that water means a proximity to all those hurricanes. Still, the winters are absolutely fabulous with no shoveling of the white stuff. I'm in a place that's not too touristy either, which suits me just fine, though it is a mecca for the retirees which can get tiresome. I'm among those who'd like to visit Australia & New Zealand too, but doubt if that'll ever happen. Haven't been to Texas either though my daughter's in Conroe so I'll probably make it that far one of these days. Never been to the Northwest either, though it looks fabulous and my son in Tacome really likes it, not Tacoma but the surrounding beauty.

I would like to live somewhere there is no winter at all, even if there could be hurricanes. Hurricanes only hit a location once in a while not every year so the climate would make up for it. We have tornadoes in the area every year so hurricanes wouldn't be much of a change for me.
quasi Report This Comment

It's not so much that hurricanes hit often, they don't, only one bad one here since I've been here and just two in my lifetime, and though there's enough warning in advance to prepare for them, there's a lot of mental stress involved in watching multiple storms each season that are headed in your general direction for days, wondering if it's your turn again. I'm better this year but for the last two hurricane seasons I was just this side of being an invalid, hurting and not able to move very well, and it was very stressful feeling so helpless when I'm also responsible for looking after my mom who is incapable of dealing with something like that anymore. But for six or seven months a year, it's paradise and we only see frost usually two or three times a year. I did see snow flurries once on Christmas morning 1989.

Well here I really enjoy storm season and love really strong thunder storms with all the lightning. I have tornado trackers in my scanner and know about the warnings 15 minutes before it hits the TV because the scanner tells me as they are reported to the weather bureau. Unfortunately spring around here lately hasn't been very active. If I was legal to drive I would be a storm chaser. The only thing that keeps me here is money and if I had enough I would move maybe to Florida Keys.
