Yeah - I'll admit to being old enough to play 78's - although it was at my
grandparents' place.

Though I've seen 78s (years ago) I've never played one.
I couldn't begin to guesstimate how many hours I spent lissenin to LPs (33s to
you pups), but haddn even fired up my old turntable in nearly 25yrs now. One of
these days I'll hook up the ole Panasonic and rip/encode some of the 300 LPs I
still have sittin in boxes. There's some stuff on 'em I've yet to have been
able to locate as digital files

I was allowed to play with the old 78's, couldn't touch the new LP's...

I still remember when my Mom and Dad brought home our 1st home stereo in the
mid 60s, which oddly enough they bought at a Firestone store. It was a GE
console model AM/FM/Turntable stereo unit with the controls/turntable under a
lift up lid in the top. At the time it was really a big deal mostly because it
was stereo instead of mono, which was far more common in those days
My parents used to borrow my records when they had friends over. One night they
managed to warp "Innagaddadavida", "Sweet Baby James", a Sly
and the Family Stone album and 2 more I can't recall by havin left 'em runnin on
the turntable all night long. Never did replace 'em either, which also ended
them borrowin any more
That ol stereo worked great for years til it got trashed at a party one night
when some idiot spilled a drink into it. They replaced it with a snazzy new
tabletop AM/FM/Turntable/8-track player with detached speakers in the mid 70s
... good times
BTW, an interesting bit of music history trivia ..... the 1st "rock"
LP recorded and produced in stereo as a marketing test by the record companies
to see if rock music record buyers would actually spend the extra $1 (around a
20% upcharge at the time) that stereo albums cost was ..... "Knights in
White Satin" by the Moody Blues. Buyers did, and the rest, as they say is
.... history
