He recorded an awesome version of Hard Rains' Gonna Fall
which was on the very first album I bought as a kid.

Leon Russell was such a cool dude.

These guys are dying way too young but I'm guessing
that's partly the price of fame, sex, drugs, rock n roll
and not giving up cigarettes.

Travel well Leon.....

I credit my Mom with so much of my love of music and she had an interesting way of insuring I received some of my collection of vinyl.

We had a bet about a line from "This Masquerade" off the Carney album, which she lost (I suspicion intentionally), and low and behold, the album showed up under the Christmas tree that year.

In her last year we spent many hours on the road makin the hour each way runs back and forth to Dallas for her chemo treatments and I made lotsa mp3 discs of tunes as accompaniment for those rides.

She'd be sittin there in the passengers seat jammin away, groovin to the tunes as we cruised along. I made sure to include "This Masquerade" on several of those discs.

Now that's a nice story Kim, thanks for sharing

We need more of those on here :-)

The album was "Electrifying Hits 71"
A compilation that had some pretty cool musos on it,
most of them were their first recordings.

There was Leon Russell, Elton John (Country Comfort) Rod Stewart (Maggie May)
Redbone (Witch queen of New Orleans), Five Man Electrical Band (Signs)
even a young Olivia Newton John (If not for you) and others

I saw a (vinyl) copy of it at a market last year and am kicking myself for not getting it
I think I wore my original copy out years ago.

Thanks for the positive nod Pablo. The frustrated poet/writer in me slips out from time to time and bein able to share real life stories at the same time is kinda like a bonus.

What you'll come to find here is that there's a core group of diverse souls with various backgrounds and interests coupled with others that breeze in and out from time to time. Most of the shit slingin comes from the bit players. I "try" to avoid joinin into such frays, though I don't always succeed, especially when it gets political star wars fighting

The purist in me usually makes me shy away from compilations but that sounds like a helluvan album with all great tunes! Are you sayin it had a version of "Country Comfort" by Leon Russell and Elton John? If so I don't think I've ever heard that. Always liked Rods version a lot though, big fan of his old stuff all around really.

Growin up in the 60s I was introduced to Janis, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix, The Jefferson Airplane and lots more when they were still new to the airwaves and most of 'em while ridin around in my Moms Kharman Ghia before FM even had gained any traction ... good times!

One of these days (famous procrastinator phrase) I'll get around to digitizing all my old LPs as there's some stuff there I've yet to have found digital files to replace 'em with nerd

No, Leon's track was a cover of "hard rain's gonna fall"

It was Elton who recorded "Country Comfort" after originally writing it with Bernie Taupin.
However Rod Stewart did have a shot at it first.

Was reading the other day though, that Leon Russell recently played piano
for Elton John on one of his tours in 2010.
That's like selling pasta to Italy isn't it? :-)

With their styles so polarly opposite it's hard to imagine them sharing a stage at all!

Heard a funny story by an old band mate of Leon Russels.

There was sposta be a practice session with his band and an orchestra one afternoon and Leon showed up a cuppla hours late. Said he entered the concert hall from the front door and walked with a limp from an old injury so he had a kinda funny walk and slowly walked/hobbled all the way down the main aisle, up the stairs, onto the stage, then to his piano bench and sat down.

The cat directing the rehersal started berating him for bein late and holding everyone else up. Leon just sat there listening until he was finished, then stood up and slowly, walked/hobbled off stage, down the steps and back out of the hall without ever sayin a word, as if to say without ever uttering anything in reply (*butt*)
