There are no markings I can find on it and I don't really know what kind of metal it is either. It has some weight to it and would hurt if thumped in the head with the handle. None of the old timers around the fleamarket know what it is either. None of the edges are sharp so a surgical tool is probably not right and another guess was an old time button hook but it is pretty big for that. Since I don't know what it is I wouldn't be able to say who is right and who is wrong but my guess of a soup spoon for dieters is definitely wrong.

Shoes sometimes had buttons once upon a time - perhaps it's a combination of shoehorn and shoe buttonhook.

It's a sewing needle.

couldn't tell it that was a quarter or a nickel...finally decided it's a dime...next to the shoe horn

I think rope and canvas sails. It's a sewing needle.

If it is a button hook shoes would have had very large buttons and holes for this.

Yes that is a dime next to it for size, Odamna's economy kept me from using a quarter.

I used to be in the Navy and never saw anything like this before, not to say it's not possible.

If someone find what it is for sure I would appreciate it. One person on my Facebook page suggested it was an olive dipper.

Some kind of core'er or pip remover maybe too large for olives.

I assume the business end of it is the oval open end and the other end is the handle. The doesn't appear to be any sharp edges.

It's a woolder but good luck trying to google that.
I'll find something, it's ancient rope making kit.

It is a clay working tool, used in making pottery and sculpture.

I still think it's related to rope sewing, joining or splicing.

I have seen clay molding tools and ones similar to this seem smaller.

A woolder seems likely though.

This is the one that has puzzled me for years...
