Nope, it is a chemical compound. An alcoholic drink is a solution or mixture but pure alcohol is not.

Product of the American schooling system no doubt.
It reads "alcohol" not "an alcohol".
Besides, it's meant to be funny not factual.

I am sorry if I appear to be too much of a stickler for facts for your liking HP. It is just how I am. It is a good joke anyway. And yeah, most times when we say alcohol we are talking about alcoholic drinks, that is true. Still alcohol, or more properly ethanol, is a chemical compound. If you wanted to fire back against my pedantic post you could have pointed that out but you missed the opportunity.

Which Polks kim?

I've still got my RTi 10's that I bought about 7 years ago, still awesome speakers. Love 'em.

I ditched the Rotel amp I had a year or two back and bought a Denon 4311 to run them. I love that setup, and my neighbours still hate me.

I'll be right 'round kimmy. Maybe next Texas F1 GP winking

All I really need is a clean 50/ch watt or better stereo amp and a decent cassette deck with Dolby B&C. I have a metric ass-load of cassettes.

And a pair of 300w spkrs but they need to be loud to sound good. Apartment. Not happening here.

A cassette deck will come my way eventually. I've been through some pretty good units. Wore em all out smiling
smiley I have a Panasonic boom box but it doesn't do the noise reduction and not satisfactory for copying tape to CD from tapes with Dolby encoding. I guess Dolby is being an ass about it and still won't let any programmers have the specs on the old B and C NR so there aren't any plugins for editing software. Not that I've found anyhow.

The Polks I picked up are a pair the Monitor Series II 60s, also a pr of Monitor series II 40s to use as center channels for 2 separate systems and then 2 pr of their small bookshelf speakers to use for side and rear channels for my 7.1 system for the LR. Sadly I have as yet been able to fire up all these new toys.

I picked up a used Yamaha RX-V1600 receiver but when it arrived it had shipping damage that had killed it disappointed smiley

Oh well, just have to ship it back so I can get a refund and find another similar model. I like a lot of the features of the newer 7.1s/7.2 receivers they have and the reviews are stellar on pretty much all of 'em but the new ones have all dropped phono inputs completely and I want something I can finally use to digitize all my old LPs with, so ...

I "just" missed a helluva deal on a one owner RX-V3900 I found on Ebay and would really like to find another one like that so I'll just keep my eyes peeled for one grinning smiley

I thought you already were doing LP->CD?
Mrkim Report This Comment

The back panel was caved in slightly. I had hoped the damage was just cosmetic and though that wouldn't have been great, I'd have lived with it. When you power it up the display lights up for about 1/2 a second then goes off. Really sux since the unit was immaculate otherwise, didn even have any dust inside the case (headexplode)

Nope, fossil and I have tried a cuppla different freebie receivers he found on craigslist but so far none have worked. One of 'em was a monster Fisher receiver that was a flagship model when new but it had a blown channel, same with an old JVC receiver I had mothballed.

If I can get the right deal on a RX-V3900 I plan to get one as these are awesome A/V receivers. 140 watts at a THD level of just 0.04% is wickedly pure audio and it does some equally impressive video upconverting in addition to a ton of neat audio tricks tailored for either the audio purist or just HT music/sound reproduction rock
on

Back in the 80s I owned one of JVCs top of the line cassette decks that utilized their proprietary ANRS and Super ANRS filtering systems in lieu of Dolby and found them to be far superior to the high end decks of the day with Dolby. I was able to use standard and metal tapes to make cassettes of far better quality than the commercial tapes even when dubbin 'em off of my album collection through an old Technics turntable I was usin! Might see if you can snag one of those blah smiling bouncing smiley

"I" broke "em? I guess if pluggin a receiver into the wall and connectin a left and right channel speaker to the back can somehow "break" a receiver, maybe I did. 'Course if you don't power 'em up or hook a pair of speakers to a receiver I do kinda wonder how one would ever expect to do anything with one?

Nah, never laid a wrench on fossils 'Stang, it was already highly tweaked when he got it. Though there were some things we kicked around doin to it, we never got the chance disappointed smiley

I read stuff all the time about the depth and warmth of music off LPs and all I can say is ..... BS! There are so many variables in the mix when playin an LP that impact or can impact the output quality and even when playin an LP for the very 1st time and having taken every sensible precaution before playin it, using a nice light, quality cartridge and adjusting the tone arm balance and anti-skate settings to the Nth degree ,,,, there were still clicks and pops that in the old days were just accepted as a part of the process.

When I fire up Rhythmbox and scroll down the list to find what I wanna hear, then push play I'm greeted with exactly what I want, when I want it, no muss, no fuss and the sound quality from my 'puters 7.1 audio card pumped through even the simple Dell/Altec Lansing sub/amp then out to the cheesy lil Aiwa speakers I've been usin lately is pretty damned good.

LPs are how I got started bein able to listen to my fave tunes, but these days .... gimme digital files rock

I thought you guys were talking about doing some after market shit to it. Oh well.

So what is the main malfunction with getting LPs to CDs? You don't need a big ass kicking stereo for that.

Our posts crossed.

Ok I get the picture on the car thing. So that joke's no good. Dang.

I completely agree with you. There is nothing wrong with digital recording and it is more reliably accurate than analog recording by a long shot unless you get into really high speed tapes, like 30 IPS. LPs are and always have been an inherently flawed medium and there's not a fucking thing anyone can do about it. Audiophiles have points on some gear but they lose hands down on the LP argument.

Oh yeah... Check your speakers & cables for a short Kim.

i was kicking around the idea of a blower/ super charger vs. turbo for it (Kim had a turbo that would make it scream in his storage), but the rest was just like i wanted it. upper and lower control arms front and rear sway bars, lowered 3 inches, powder coated valve covers, strut tower brace, cold air intake, Steeda under drive pullies, headers, Borla extreme exhaust, 3:73 rear end, and my favorite thing about the car...the Hurst short throw cue ball shifter. thumbs
downthumbs
down.

and yeah, i probably drove a bit crazy on the hour long trip to the sticks (Kim's) with the receivers and broke them on the way. we need to find a needle for that Technics turn table, i think it's the best of the 3.

At least the (even longer now) drive between our casas is all nice smooth highway ... till ya get to the last 1/4 mile leg of it which is nice rock road up the hill to my place fossil. I trashed the Technics turntable just last weekend and kept that Sansui you brought out along with the cartridge from the Technics, which was still good and will give it all another try once I get another receiver.

Yeah Blah, though I know it dudn take an uber-badass receiver to do LP to digital converting I am trying to get an RX-V3900 for all the reasons I mentioned, not just to rip my LPs into .flac files.

BTW, to anyone rippin their LPs/CDs in as .mp3s, the sound quality from the uncompressed .flac files are far better/fuller, but be forewarned, they're also HUGE files with some large compilation LPs/CDs coming out to as big as 1gig! The difference is like night and day between the output quality of these 2 differing file types though, so if HD space iddn a concern, give .flacs a try rock
on

I don't believe Winblows Media Player will convert or play .flacs so you'll hafta get inventive in finding another Windbag program to take care of that. For we few Linux cats it's a snap with Audacity for the encoding, then pretty much any Linux media player will handle the .flacs as it's an open source format grinning smiley

I've located an RX-V3900 and am in negotiations with the seller for it, so we'll see if I get lucky. Part of my query to the seller is if he still has the original box and padding to insure this one has the best chance of making it here without bein damaged.

BTW, I already thought of the possibility of a short and disconnected all wiring from the receiver except the power cable and the result's the same ... it's a goner disappointed smiley

I haven't done any LP copying in a real long time. I've never used any compression when copying lps to digital, I just do it as wav files and delete em when I'm done burning the disc. I haven't done any in a long time though. I've only played around with compression for things that don't matter much to me. My turntable has a built in preamp so I don't need anything else. It a cheap thing but works fine and needs a new needle. Someone bent the needle shaft by knocking the tone arm onto the platter.
Mrkim Report This Comment

Is it a USB turntable? When I 1st started lookin into rippin my LPs I looked at every different model I could find and decided I'd stay with a decent old school turntable and a receiver instead.

The direct drive Sansui fossil snagged offa Craigslist seems to be a pretty nice one that had a trashed cartridge (diamond was gone) but the one off my old Technics slipped right onto the tone arm.

I managed to set up a deal with the cat with the RX-V3900 so as soon as I get it in and get through fiddlin with all the myriad of settings I figure I'll set up the Sansui and see what gives.

There's quite a bit I have on LP that never made it into the digital realm. Luckily I took pretty good care of my LPs so they're in pretty pristine condition for the most part, especially considering most of 'em are now 30-45yrs old (*binladen*)

Yep it's an overpriced Ion USB unit my wife gave me a few years ago but I don't use the USB interface because it sounds shitty. The phono preamp it has built in works fine. The basic mechanics of the unit are good. It lacks a tone arm cue lever which is dumb and a cover which are my only real complaints about it. The sound quality is good. I would have bought something different & better if I was doing the shopping.
