I dunno Kim, I've camped in Texas and the ants there chewed right through the tent fabric.

We've got some pretty huge black carpenter ants up here and they are definitely big enough to pinch you. The worst ants I've run into though are in those little red fire ants you folks have down there. Owie owie owie! I think that is the worst insect bite I've ever experienced.

Every time I mow the yard I end up with at least one fire ant bite and usually several; little bastards.

Fight fire with fire, eh? Probably ultimately safer than the chemical poisons and a lot more fun too.

take a stick and poke it as deep as you can in the mound, quickly remove stick before they run up the stick and get you, pour in gas quickly, and light 'em up!

The gasoline itself is killing them. It won't burn once it is in the dirt, there's not enough oxygen for it to. All that will burn are the fumes as it evaporates out so the fire is on the surface, not in the mound. It's still more fun though.

yes genius, but when you poke the stick in, they come running to the surface. (*facepalm*)

Use DE on fire ant mound. Diatomaceous earth. Works good on anything with an exoskeleton.

DE works. Boracic acid does as well.

I tried boric acid on the roaches which migrated from the neighbors home to my house and it didn't work but DE did and now we are roach free.

I think it depends on how thick the exoskeleton of the bug is. My sister said the same thing about palmetto bugs and both BA and DE. Larger bugs probably take longer to dehydrate too and that's what kills them using those things.

I guess Patience is what is important when fighting insects.
