I was almost sure at least one of you would know what it is. Do ya need more hints?

Ok, one more hint for now... F_D was kind of almost in the ballpark sort of but too far off to count. It is a vibrator but it is not a sex toy (unless some one has a metallic piercing in the right place I guess). It is designed to vibrate something else using electromagnetic pulses.

What's the matter, all you are out of goofy guesses already? Say Uncle and I'll tell you what it is.

I believe it's an Ebow.

Bingo! You're right. It is an Ebow. You must be a guitarist.

For those unfamiliar and interested see this link:

An Ebow gives continuous sustain to a guitar string by creating an electro-magnetic feedback loop using two coils aligned with the guitar string and a small amplifier. The grooves on the foot of it are to help align the coils with the string. The input coil senses the vibration of the string (exactly like a pickup on an electric guitar), the amp chip amplifies the signal and sends it through the output coil which causes the string to keep vibrating. It "self-tunes" the amp to the amplified signal and becomes an oscillator that includes the string in the feedback loop. It works really well and is a very simple circuit. Is not anything like the slide guitar effect with a glass or metal slide. You can use them together though, and that's pretty cool sounding too.

The closest tolerance problem in the design is the locations of the coils in respect to the string and a magnetic pickup on the electric guitar, which serves to GREATLY increase the signal to the point of very high distortion. It is a very simple design but impractical to home brew. Easier to buy one instead.
