My turn for a "What is it?" pic. The black part of this item is about 1.5cm in each dimension, as a size reference.

You'll find a pic of me there, but not this.

Looks like a foot mount for a camera flash but it's missing the contact points and not sure what the connector on the front does.

Yeah, it's about the right size too but some flash units do have a wire connecting to the camera. It also looks sorta like an mobile antenna window mount but I don't think it's that either.

if you had another one, would the grooves in the black part at the bottom fit together with the groove at the top? so you could stack them up? some sort of spacer or extension...but what is the deal on the front? a rivet or socket?

The thing on the front is a mini coaxial connector like what you'd see on the back-plane bracket of a PC wireless card. It is an antenna mount of some sort. I am almost certain of it.

Onyma and Blah got it between them. It mounts onto the flash mount of your camera with a cord connected to the front of it to trigger studio strobes (flashes). You can also mount things you might mount on the flash mount of your camera, so technically you could mount them in series as PJ suggested, but you wouldn't ever need to. It doesn't have the same connection points as a camera mounted flash as it is just a trigger for the lights which have their settings adjusted independently.

I shoulda gone with my 1st impression huh? smiling

Yep, I see it now. It takes the flash pulse from the camera and ports it out for external use. I knew I'd seen one before.

Now in my mind I see the photo session setup the portrait studios set up for school pics with all the remote lights. *FLASH* Ahhh! My EYES! Ms. Crabapple, I'm blind, can I go home now? Actually the remote lamps were easier on the eyes since they were deflected up and to the sides in most cases.
