Locks with names on them attached to a fence. What's so mysterious about it ?

Whatever it's for, it's more symbolism over substance..

Someone should cut all the locks off, melt down the metal to make one giant lock, lock it in place there and have ground into it this message: Love is a lie.
That would teach them......

"The locks started to appear recently in a new trend popular amongst young couples visiting the area. The new tradition calls for a couple to attach their lock to the fence surrounding the statue of Celliniothe Ponte Vecchio and throw the key into the Arno below, thus sealing their love forever." www.theflorentine.net/issue/TF202005.pdf

Wow, that is romantic. I like to seal my relationship with a punch to the face, followed by the threat, "If you ever leave me, I will kill your family." I'm a hoot on Valentine's Day.

I just wonder if the city council wishes to leave all those locks there or if they are going to take them away now and them.... consider that this picture is taken on one of the most famous anchient bridges in the world.....

Upon immediate notation to this strange phenomena is the rather obtruse garbage container in the upper left corner of the photo.
Is this symbolic in itself or perhaps merely an apparition containing the souls of those who may leap from these walls tot heir death below?
One will never know.
