Neither one...one says values it was founded on ...the other says it was not founded on a religion....they are differnt

Also wasn't said by Washington it appears. The phrase was spoken by a government representative appointed by Washington in a treaty, but wasn't officially approved until John Adams was president. Either way though the point stands, it was generally a 'founding fathers' opinion.

I find it very interesting that the left would use this quote in this way, I believe what the quote then was indicating was that we had no one religion sanctioned by the government such as Great Britain at the time, but we were a very diverse country of several different beliefs all based on Christian values. I do not believe that at that time there were any Muslims in the colonies. Now we are using the quote to say we have a country of other than the Christian based faith and therefore not the enemy of Islam in an attempt to appease the Islamic world.
