when their tee shot is about to hit another golfer do they call out, 'ONE!'?

yeah I know it's 'fore' and not 'four'...

Contrary to all the reliable sources I have investigate, I think you are meant to call out the number of the hole you are aiming for, so the players on that green can GTFOOTW.

you yell 'fore' to warn someone that they may be about to be hit by your ball, now that doesn't necessarily mean they are standing on the green of the same hole you are currently playing, or in fact even on any green...they may be on the adjacent fairway...in the parking lot...peeing in the bushes...anywhere...

The yelling of "fore" was a tradition started by the Scots at St. Andrews in 1622, to entice the English on the course to turn around and face the incoming missiles, thereby exposing their vulnerable parts.

every time i hear "FORE!" i think of this story:
my dad and i were playing a friend of mine and his dad one time. teeing off on an elevated tee box, long straight down hill par 5. the group ahead of us are about 250 yds out. we all decided that we would hit into them easy, so pat says he can hit, he's been having a bad driving day. he lets loose the smoothest swing i think i have ever seen him swing (Arnold Palmeresque swing), crushes one right down the middle and starts to slice, we yelled "FORE!", one guy turns around, the ball takes a dip and turns right for him, he took off running towards the trees, looking over his shoulder a the ball. the faster he ran, the more that ball sliced! like it had eyes! it hits him right in the back of the thigh and he goes down like a rock! smiling bouncing smiley by the tie we got down there, he had a whelt the size of....you know. smiling bouncing smiley

that was almost 20 years ago and it seems like yesterday.
