That's not a crash, or even a ditching, that's a beautiful dead stick landing on water. That pilot is great.

Sure is a great pilot, quasi.

Outcome would have been dramatically different had a less skilled pilot dug a wingtip into the drink and cartwheeled the plane into many bits and pieces.thumbs

Heard that he's been flying airliners since 1980 and flew F4's before that. He's got like 19K hours or something like that in airliners. He's either really good or really lucky or both. Guy should get a medal.

Had this happened in the middle of the summer the outcome could have been very different. Warm water and increased boat traffic could have spelled disaster. The pilot was very skilled and luck was on his side as well. What he did after the landing spells the caliber of man he is. He waited until everyone was out and walked the aisle twice to make sure everyone got out before exiting the plane. A real hero more from his actions after the landing then the landing itself.

It's really good to know the A320 floats so well. They fly in & out of our little local airport and there is a nice big river and huge but shallow harbor nearby.

The A320 has the ability to seal all openings in the fuselage on command if a water ditching is necessary.

When your airliner suddenly turns into a brick, and you need someone to get it back to Earth in one piece, having an F-4 driver in the left seat is about as good as it's going to get.

The water landing doesn't make him a hero in my book, but it does make him a damn good pilot - one that I'd want piloting me if I was in the back. I do believe he is a hero though, and as already mentioned, it was his "the captain should be the last one off" attitude that makes him a hero in my opinion. He deserves every acolade he gets, and every passenger and crew member on board owe him their lives.

That word gets used way too much these days. [dictionary.reference.com]
A pilot who lands a stricken plane or a soldier who is wounded in action is just a pilot & a soldier. They did exactly what every other pilot or soldier would do in those circumstances. Same goes for police, firefighters & whatever. A hero does something above and beyond the call of duty.
Here's an example, even though he is quoted as saying "all soldiers are heroes"...
